Every Tuesday night at The Globe (220 Brunswick St, Fortitude Valley), 7pm

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Secret Movie Society?

For starters, it's a secret. To learn more, show up, or get on our e-mail list.

Howcome you need my name and address at the door?

The Globe is currently licensed as a club, much like an RSL or a Bowls League, and so we require temporary membership dues in order to serve you booze. These dues don't cost you a penny (we've built them into our already low, low ticket prices), but we do need to collect information as to who came when so it all looks good to the liquor license gods. It's a very small price to pay for the ability to get pleasantly plastered before a few strange flicks, no?

What's a 4pack?

It's a little card worth four admissions to any Far Out Films night, and it costs $40. This means each entry is just $10, quite a savings from the regular $15 price! You can either use a 4pack card to get a group of people in, to get yourself in on multiple nights, or any combination of the two. There is no expiration date, ever, at all.

How can I suggest a film?

Just drop us a line at faroutfilms@richvein.com.au, or tell the ticket attendant at the event. You can also give suggestions to Dave. He's real friendly. Kind of like a teddy bear. We can't make any promises, because we have to get film rights and censorship approval, but we can do our best. Most of the films on the latter half of our current schedule are from audience and friends' suggestions.

I suggested ... and you said 'cool', so where is it?

There are a great many excellent films out there we'd love to show, but can't because of rights unavailability. The biggest culprit in this is UIP, who own the rights to all Universal and Paramount pictures. They will only allow theatres to show movies on film, and there are no film reels available for movies older than 10 or 15 years. This is the reason we can't bring you The Wiz, Harold & Maude, Xanadu, Can't Stop the Music, any Star Trek, the great monster movies of Bela Legosi and Boris Karloff, and many other well-known classic films. We are conducting a fierce whinging campaign along with our friends at Monthly Cult Films in order to have this policy changed.

Will you show my film?

Maybe. If we like it. We are trying to organise a series of local short films to screen after the main double features every night, if the audience is interested. If you would like your short film to be considered, send a screener to: Far Out Films, PO Box 8443, Woolloongabba Q, 4102

Where can I get advance tickets?

Nowhere, at the moment. For the same reasons we can't publish our entire schedule, there are major problems with printing and distributing tickets in advance. Basically, it would be expensive, and we'd have to pass that cost on. You probably hate ticket surcharges as much as we do. If seating becomes an issue as events sell out, we will work out a system. Until then, just rock up between 6:30 and 7 pm and fork over that cash, baby.

Can I bring my kids?

Sorry, no. Our agreement with the Office of Film and Literature Classification is such that we can only offer admission to persons 18 years or older. This allows us to show unrated films, and greatly expands our catalogue of features. Also, since we serve alcohol at the event, restricting the age keeps things simple for our hardworking bar staff. Also, our movies tend to have topless horseback riding in them. You try explaining that sight to a six-year-old without proper knowledge of Newtonian physics.

Tuesday night? I'll miss my train!

We are keenly aware that some of you poor unfortunate souls out there have real jobs which commence during morning hours. That's why we don't show three-hour Kevin Costner movies. (Well, that's one reason.) Far Out Films generally wraps up between 10:30 and 11:00 pm, in plenty of time for that last train out of town.
